Novak Djokovic is one of the tennis greats. No question about that. At this point, he is a 24-time Grand Slam champion who has been rated No. 1 longer than any player in tennis history.
Late in his career at 37, plagued by injury and facing much younger competitors, he is still on the court. In preparation for the Australian Open in January, 2025, Djokovic hired former tennis champion Andy Murray to prepare him for the tournament.
Why? Because no one knows his game better, Djokovic and Murray met 36 times as professionals with Djokovic holding a 25-11 advantage. When asked, Djokovic replied “He knows my game and everything that I've been through very well. He knows the things that are wrong with my game, all of my mistakes.” Djokovic had to retire in the semi-final of the match.
Djokovic’s decision to hire his formal rival as his coach underscores the mindset of a true champion. He went to the most knowledgeable person he could to improve his game. There is a lesson there for CEOs who aspire to play at their best. Hire someone who knows you well to elevate your performance.
Champions never stop learning. They check their pride and ego at the door and develop “The Art of Practice.” For CEOs, the game never stops.. What insights can they develop? How can they look at their challenges and opportunities differently? How can they get better?
This is CEO Mental Fitness. Some business leaders may resist engaging a CEO Coach or Business Advisor questioning what they may have to learn or perceiving such guidance as remedial. However, top CEOs are curious about what they don’t know and have a relentless drive to elevate their game.
Seriously, seek out the experience and talent you need to elevate your game. Whether it's hiring a coach, joining a CEO peer group or attending conferences, surround yourself with people that will make you better.
